Visiting the Sainte Madeleine Chapel
In 1869 Charles Joseph de Gargan, owner of the estate at that time, enlisted all the country's leading artistic figures to transform the simple chapel into a majestic monument. Stained-glass windows manufactured by master glass-maker Maréchal, renowned for his work in the Metz cathedral. Bold sculptures, magnificent white marble altar, and Italian marble mosaic flooring: nothing was too beautiful to adorn this chapel.
The keystones depict the story of the Domaine de Preisch : the first one bears the coat of arms of François de Lasalle, the second that of Monsieur de Gargan. Among the lateral arches, you can see the heraldry of Albert of Preisch, first lord of Preisch (1122) and that of the Schawenbourg family, whose two 16th-century effigies are located on either side of the white marble altar.
There are hidden and carefully guarded gems that leave an unforgettable impression, and the Sainte-Madeleine Chapel, just a short walk from the Château, is one of those treasures you won't forget.
The chapel is registered as a Historical Monument of France, and is currently undergoing restoration. While its façade immediately impresses visitors, its interior will go through a long process of renovation to bring back its former splendor. In this project, the DRAC, Fondation du Patrimoine, mission Bern and the Loto du Patrimoine offered their valuable support. These generous and essential contributions will enable us to welcome the public again.
